Between Here and Home
Family Letters, Faith and Belonging After the War in Bosnia
What does it mean to hear from someone you fear you might lose?
This digital exhibition brings together handwritten letters received by my parents from family members during the war in Bosnia, alongside contemporary reflections from relatives living in Vienna and Birmingham. Through these documents and personal testimonies, it explores the emotional worlds created by separation, displacement, and the need to remain connected to those left behind.
A letter could carry news of survival, an expression of longing, or the reassurance that someone was still thinking of you. Its significance extended beyond its words: the handwriting itself offered a tangible trace of a person who could not be physically present.
Today, family members share their memories of fleeing Bosnia, arriving elsewhere, and finding their way through unfamiliar places. Their recollections sit alongside the letters, opening a dialogue between what was communicated at the time and what is remembered now.
Moving between handwritten correspondence and contemporary digital messages, the exhibition asks how the ways we communicate shape our experiences of distance and belonging. What makes a place home? What do we carry with us when we leave? And how do the words of those we love help us remain connected across borders and generations?
Rather than offering a single account of displacement, this exhibition brings together fragments of a shared family history, preserving the letters and stories through which its experiences continue to be remembered.
